Jacksonian Democrcay essays

Jacksonian Democrcay essays As a guardian of individual liberty, Andrew Jackson, once again, had good intentions but was blind to his own mistakes and wrongdoing. No different from almost all of the whites in the 1820s and 1830s, Jackson failed accept blacks and Indians as true people of America. Would a man truly set out to fight for individual liberty support, and participate in slavery or to deny Native American the ability to own land? Absolutly not. The Jacksonian Democrats saw themselves as guardians of equality of economic opportunity; this was far from the truth. The first action that failed to make the American economy equal and more effective was Jacksons Tariff of Abominations. These selfish tariffs, created mainly to obtain supporters in the North, undoubtedly helped the Mid-Atlantic States, along with New England, and their manufacturing of goods and textiles. However, contrary to equal economic opportunity, the Southern states were severely hurt by the new polices. The high tariffs led the Southern plantation owners to fear a decline in cotton and tobacco exports, which would ultimately lead to a decline in slavery the backbone of the Southern economy. Again, in 1832, Jackson made a decision that would eventually leave America in its worst depression yet. It was a gutsy veto, coming in an election year, but it did show Jackson would do everything to fight for the common folk when he said, It is to be regretted that the rich and powerful too often bend the acts of government to their selfish purposes. (Doc. B) By selfishly vetoing the renewal of the National Bank, he set America back and he failed to realize the positive side of having such an institution. Understanding the true power the bank had and that most states supported it, Daniel Webster replied to this veto by simply stating, It raises a cry that liberty is in danger. (Doc. C) Liberty truly was in dan...

Immigration and Asylum Law - Coursework Example This is usually genuine as those who do so follow the stipulated rules and procedures. On the other hand; asylum is the movement of people from their land to another country for the sake of security and seeking for refuge (Mabbutt, 2011 P. 15). The asylum law is the protection granted to aliens who cannot return to their homeland according to the free online dictionary. The government’s efforts to curb immigration Immigration remains a major issue across all sectors, including business, universities and wider society. The governments always try to curb this issue through various ways. The former labor government introduced several measures to regulate immigration through the borders, citizenship, and immigration act (Amnesty, 2006 P. 17 ). It initiated new requirements for those seeking citizenship, including a condition for having been in employment for three consecutive years (Euroasylum, 2007 P. 277). It also introduced citizenship tests and tightened up regulations on over seas students. Though the labor government adopted some measures to control immigration, these controls seemed to be ineffective as there was unlimited migration which greatly placed unacceptable pressures on public service (Commitee, 2008 P. 205). The aim of conservative party in controlling immigration The conservative government has declared that it is their aim to taking action to tackling immigration by reducing the level of net immigration to sustainable levels down from the hundreds of thousands to the tens of thousands within the lifetime of its parliament. They have laid down a strategic plan which they are going to use in order to achieve this objective (Population, 2011 P. 70). The conservative party aims to achieve this through a two stage process: Conservative party immigration policy: (Mabbutt, 2011 P. 27 ). The first stage is making eligible for admission those who will benefit the economy. The second stage is an annual limit to control the numbers admitted with regar d to the wider effects on society and the provision of public services (Vision, 2008 P. 105). The conservative government also aims to apply the transitional controls in the future for all EU entrants To enforce such controls and to prevent illegal; immigration and to combat criminals who compromise their security, they will need a new, integrated approach to managing their borders. They thus introduce a dedicated border police force to bring together all the agencies responsible for border control (Currency, 2010 P. 75). The police force will have the power to stop, search, detain and prosecute the terrorist, traffickers and illegal immigrants who currently slip through the net .only then will be able to start making Britain safer. We have introduced the first ever cap on the number of non-EU economic migrants admitted into the UK to live and work. We have clamped down on abuses of the student visa route – the largest single immigration route and one which experienced widesp read abuse (UNDP, 2010 P.77). We are considering how to reform the family visa route and will soon take action to do so. We will end the link between temporary routes and permanent settlement. We have ended the detention of children for immigration purposes. We will create a dedicated Border Police Force, as part of the new National Crime Agency, to enhance national security, improve immigration controls and crack down on the trafficking of

Creating an Emergnecy Service Delivery Operation Essay

Creating an Emergnecy Service Delivery Operation - Essay Example The company will enjoy a contingent team of experience team to fill in any gap occasioned anytime. The volunteer aspect will also serve as the company’s corporate social responsibility where it connects to the people of the surrounding where its domain is felt (Thomas, & Voss, 2009). The company strategic goals and objectives will be to enhance capacity and provide extensive support in alleviating human suffering during cases of emergencies that require swift responses. The organization envisages conducting a survey regarding certain crucial information that will make the management have useful information at hand that will make them make informed choices on how to roll operation. This is in terms of routes, population density, and the area morphology. The organization also plans to increase their service two folds higher compared to the current level (Sene, 2008). In the case of fire which is the most destructive in terms of devastation and time, our organization will need tw o fire fighting vehicles fully loaded with at least 20 trained and experienced personnel in fire mitigation. In the flood rescue, it will need chopper plane, a number of life jackets, and at least 5 trained personnel in such calamities. In the case of the mass casualty incident to say road accident, the organization will need at least three ambulances with trained medical team-this may be a road accident or something of similar magnitude. In the case of a urban fire interface, the organization may need up to 100 personnel and a fleet of 10 fire fighting vehicles with functional system. In the organization, the day-to-day duties will be organized as if there is already signs that there will be a disaster at specific time. This is to avoid any delay in cases of the emergencies. The operation manager will confirm that at least five fire-fighting vehicles are ready with full load of system to respond to any emergency without any delay. The human resource manger will also confirm that th e minimum number of the personnel area available anytime any day for maximum preparation to any emergency. The toll free call has to be examined every day and their functionality noted, the recipient to the call must always be at the desk to attend to any cal on time (Blyth, 2008). This is seen as a good strategy and preparation that will ensure immediate response to the emergencies. The organization will depend on the government assistance during annual budgeting though this is not always enough to manage emergencies throughout the year. The organization is thus linking with other firms and corporate bodies to contribute in the running of the daily affairs as part of giving back to the society (Thompson, 2004). Well-wishers and philanthropist are also being courted to help the organization meet their objectives. We will also be working on getting grants from other bodies. We have to emphasize that resources are the lifeline of this organization and in the case of shortage; it can h ardly achieve its objectives as stipulated. The regional state response partners will be the city governor. We find this the best alternative since the city also has a parallel system that can supplement this. It is therefore easy to execute operation intended with them. We face several changes; this includes narrow roads and poor traffic adherence by other motorist, this always delays our operation in the cases of emergencies. The construction of the building

The Impact Of Social Policies On Wellness Essay Example for Free

The Impact Of Social Policies On Wellness Essay The continual interdependence of states in global economic relations has necessitated debates on environmental, health and social related issues, making adoption and executions of policies the remedy for the various shortcomings in various sectors. Since policies are at the core of addressing major issues, the efficiency of health policies are affected by poverty, level of education and socio-economic status. (Leigh 2004:1-2) The impact of global policies on health, nonetheless has improved the quality of life, as more awareness is been mounted, the Health Impact Assessment (HIA) stands as a tool for measuring the impact of global and public policies on health. This cuts across environment, health, gender issues, and the continual relevance of policies has been seen in the EU’s adoption of policies to protect the environment and health. (Samuel Kefee 2007: 1-4) The role of governments stemming from the Federal governments still depends on adoption and execution of policies, the other tiers of government should work alongside the policies and ensure efficiency of services. The impact of Medicaid and other non-governmental organisations shows the role of networking and cooperation towards achieving efficiency and service delivery. The impact of health issues on welfare has refocused the direction of policies towards the health and environmental sectors. More funding needs to be directed at the Medicare services. The arguments of state welfarism and health have resulted in arguments of the best way to manage the welfare of citizens. The role of public or social policy in addressing the health, environmental and other issues is however crucial, the recent trend of paediatric obesity is associated with the United States Culture of consumption of energy dense foods and less exercise. ( Krishnamoorthy, etal 2006: 1-5) A need to turn around the whole situation requires effective policies and execution.

Letters Home :: Creative Writing Essays

Letters Home The vid screen is dark and ominous, as if it holds secrets that is not for the likes of men to know. John Poldeck, a middle aged, balding man of forty-eight steps forward toward screen and console to activate the beast, this oracle of silicon, plastic, and glass. Today John is hoping for word of his son Kirk, of whom nothing had been heard of since he left for UNDF Marine Corps training at Camp Lejune, South Carolina, a beacon for the phony tough and crazy brave looking for ill conceived adventure and glory. At least that was John’s opinion on the matter. As a mid level market analyst for the transnational ABSCOM John was used to battles fought with market shares, balance sheets, and stock options. For the forty years since the birth of the revamped United Nations war and the conductors of war, the military, had been a dying business. John could still remember the eager look on Kirk’s face when his son had uttered words like, duty, honor, patriotism, words which seemed as alien to John as the worlds the UN exploratory fleet claimed to have found. â€Å"For Christ’s sake John will you turn on the damn console? What the hell is wrong with you today?† John glanced at June, his wife of twenty years and counting. Her dark skinned face was a sharp contrast to his pale complexion, and anger, tinged with concern for her son, clouded and darkened her visage even more. He looked at his wife without comprehension. â€Å"What?† June sighed, and then in a kinder tone, â€Å"The console John. I know you’ve been angry ever since Kirk left for the Marines, hell you’ve been mad ever since he first brought up enlisting. A fool’s errand you called it. Perhaps you’re right. All I know is that he might have sent us a letter today.† A fool’s errand. I remember when I said that John thought. That had been a nasty episode, one of many that had occurred during one of the endless fights he had had with Kirk over this business of enlisting. Try how he might he could never convince his son that business was where the opportunities were. Kirk had then coldly informed his father of his contempt for the Transnationals that now ran everything on Earth, including the UN, and his contempt for anybody connected to them.

Clean, Well-Lighted Place tone and style

Hemingway has a distinct writing style in a sense that he chooses his words carefully. He is economic in his word choice, so readers must take into consideration the adjectives and adverbs he uses, as he deploys them rarely. His style is simple and laconic, yet effective. Through his use of simple words and short sentences, he delivers the message powerfully and point on rather than employing descriptive, flowery language (as what his Victorian predecessors used). He is also said to be the aster of dialogue, using this mode to characterize and narrate most of the story, as was evident in â€Å"A Clean Well-Lighted Place†. Aside from the style and dialogue, another thing to take note about the story is that his tone is dispassionate and unemotional. The writer himself does not even comment on or Judge his characters at all. In the line â€Å"†You should have killed yourself last week,† he [the waiter] said to the deaf man. Hemingway did not add any additional adject ives or adverbs for momentary like for example instead of writing, â€Å"he said harshly' or â€Å"he said cruelly he Just used a simple â€Å"he said†. The tone also adds to the theme of facing nothingness with dignity. The narrator is talking about oblivion in a detached, apathetic way which gives the reader the Impression that the nothingness affects the waiter enough for him to mention it, but his tone suggests he is bold enough to face the issue in dignified, dismissive way; I. E. After all, he said to himself, It's probably only insomnia.

Essay about Sigmund Freud´s Theory in Life of Pi by Yann...

Sigmund Freud’s Theory in Life of Pi Throughout my life I have always wondered about the conscious and unconscious mind and why humans act differently in different environments. The main theory that is used in the novel â€Å"Life of Pi† by Yann Martel is the Freudian theory. The first reason why the Freudian mind has a major role in Life of Pi is because it shows that Pi will act differently upon various situations and environments. Secondly, the Freudian mind shows us that there is the id, ego and superego, which overcome Pi’s psyche and change his behavior. Lastly, Pi is consciously aware of all that is going on but the unconscious mind influences his personality and behavior without him even noticing. Although Pi is a human that is very†¦show more content†¦The component of the mind which is conscious and visible to see are the ego and superego, however the id is unconscious, hidden and is driven by things that make us feel satisfied and cannot contr ol it due to the pleasure. Although Pi is an animal lover and would never harm anything there was an animal inside him that is demonstrated after the pressure of survival took control of his mind (ID). Pi says â€Å"It was a state of tense, breathless bored† (155). When a character is bored the id takes control to satisfy your demands. A reason that kept Pi alive is Richard Parker because Pi had to stay focused just in case he tried to attack him. To be a healthy individual you would need to have a balance between the id, ego, and the superego. In this situation if the id dominated the super ego Pi would have no reason to live since the super ego is fighting for survival. Another reason how the superego was balancing with the id is because Pi is a faithful person, he states â€Å"I was giving up. I would have given up – if a voice hadn’t made itself heard in my heart†¦ Yes so long as God is with me, I will not die. Amen† (186). These are some reaso ns how the id, ego and superego altered the way Pi behaved. Pi is consciously aware of all that is going on but the unconscious mind influences his personality and behavior without him even noticing. Pi was consciously organizing carefully how he was going to salvage his food so he does not run
